Small Business Grants

The governments of various countries give serious considerations to small businesses, particularly those owned and controlled by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals or women. The US government specifically recognizes its obligation to promote and develop small business firms and bring them into the mainstream of American economic society. The U.S. Federal Government, the nation's largest provider of financial assistance for small businesses has set up various grants for small businesses that are operated by minority groups and by women.

A grant is a direct financial contribution that is made without expectation of repayment but with very specific expectations about outcomes. Organizations that give grants have criteria to meet that, by and large, exclude for-profit businesses. But you must know that there are no direct small business grants that are awarded from the federal government. Many state development agencies in the United States offer direct small business grants and other types of financial assistance designed to encourage and assist entrepreneurs in starting or expand a small business.

Since 1953 the Federal Government's Small Business Administration (SBA) has helped small businesses succeed, from start-up through the many stages of growth. SBA's grant programs generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments in an effort to expand and enhance small business technical and financial assistance. As far as individuals are concerned, SBA does not offer business grants to any entrepreneur but it does help the minority groups, the women entrepreneurs, economic development of underdeveloped regions, and numerous such activities.
  • Women have the largest opportunity of any group to benefit from the generosity of the Government Grant Programs. The federal grants are extended to non-profit organizations that could provide counseling, training and other technical assistance to women entrepreneurs. The grants are announced to conduct Women's Business Centres. SBA also runs programs that are intended to help women with training and technical assistance, access to credit and capital, government contracts and such.
  • Minority small business grants are given to organizations that are engaged in minority business development. SBA runs a Minority Enterprise Development Program known as the 8(a) program. This program seeks to provide minority entrepreneurs and contractors assistance with getting federal government contracts.
