Ways to Raise Capital

Starting, nurturing and developing a business, finding the right partners, management team and advisors, obtaining "stage appropriate" funding, exploiting growth opportunities and seizing upon an "exit strategy" are all parts of a dynamic and challenging process.

But in this whole process, capital is the key to starting a business or expanding an existing business. You can have a great concept, ideas, and people willing to work hard and give their best but if you don’t have capital it is very hard to succeed. Raising money requires a logical process and new funding doesn't happen instantly. Raising equity capital at various stages of a business's development is particularly tricky and requires proper strategies. A number of alternatives are available, and choosing the right one for you can help fuel the success of your company. Considerations for raising equity capital can include, among others, personal investment, investment from partners, or contributions from outside sources such as investors or venture capital providers. Some sources for raising capital are:

Venture Capital Firms
An investment from venture capital firms is considered more art than science, and more of a process than an end result. This form of capital investment could be at the seed stage, development, and early or later stages. A strategic relationship with a venture capital firm not only brings capital but strategic, market, financial, management, recruiting, "plan execution" and other value-added expertise, resources, contacts and discipline.

Angel Investors
If you want to raise capital for a start up business, angel investments could be a very lucrative opportunity. Angel investors who are generally wealthy individuals desire to invest time and money in companies that have both the right "fit" and the investment return potential that they are looking for. They have long played a vital role in "seed" and early stage funding, and they have become more prevalent and recognized recently.

Small Business Loans
Small business loans are getting popularity and the government of various countries provides these soft loans in order to encourage the small businesses. In the United States, the Small Business Administration (SBA) expedites its efforts to increase lending, and the ease of lending to small businesses. These loans are provided on more favourable terms, with less recourse risk and with longer maturity, than ordinary commercial loans.

Remember that obtaining capital is just the first, albeit very important, step in growing the company. The next challenge is to put that capital to work growing the company at a pace that is sustainable and maximizes return on invested capital.
